sutherlandjack:

Another photograph to show the progress of this piece.

The photograph is shitty and the colours are a bit off with the lighting but this is mainly to show how it is coming along.

Need to find an idea on how to finish the hair section.

Hmmmmmm.

sutherlandjack: Update on the room I've been working on,...

sutherlandjack:

Update on the room I've been working on, beginning to bring different elements together within the room, and working on making the area more realistic, as if it has been lived in by James Rogers The Inventor.

Should hopefully get a roof for it sorted within the next few days.

This project may make more sense to you if you read the artist statement I posted on it here.

A5

Had a set of giclée prints made of the illustration yesterday, printed onto 300gsm cold pressed paper. Need to sign them and then upload them to etsy.com, just need to have a shower and do some normal people stuff.

The actual print is A5, the border around the image makes the paper measure just over A5 including the border.

sutherlandjack:

William Burroughs.

21 cm x 21 cm

Continued on from yesterday, unsure as to whether I feel it is finished yet.

Drawn in the same colour scheme as 'The Soft Machine', the first book in his Nova Trilogy.

Created as one of three illustrations for my Bristol interview this coming friday, responding to a brief asking me to illustrate three things that influence me.

sutherlandjack: Charles Lake Continuing on the project of...

sutherlandjack:

Charles Lake

Continuing on the project of influences, this is some photographs for my third influence focusing around a past love.

Working with some images that we had together and colouring in the figures, creating silhouettes, then double exposing the film by photographing some items found in a box I used to keep stored away. Various items such as gig tickets, film negatives, polaroid print outs, and a receipt from our first chinese takeaway have been used.

The main idea of this was to show that particular objects can help fill the gaps between lost memories. The photographs may not be visually pleasing, but then again neither is love, existing mainly as an idea.

sutherlandjack: Polyethylene. A small collection of drawings...

sutherlandjack:

Polyethylene.

A small collection of drawings I've been working on for a while.

Trying to juxtapose two different connotations, by confusing the unconcious judgement we make of objects around us in every day life, and how it may distort our view of such things.

Polyethylene or polythene is the most common plastic. The annual production is approximately 80 million metric tons. Its primary use is in packaging.

sutherlandjack: Emphysema. An illustration I've been working on...

sutherlandjack:

Emphysema.

An illustration I've been working on for the past few days, something less conceptual for me, trying to create something more visually pleasing.

The constellation which is sewn is actually a molecular diagram of the hormone Oxytocin, the hormone often involved in forming human relationships, particularly those focused around love.

Going to put it up on etsy.com later.

sutherlandjack: Amphetamine induced psychosis. Something else...

sutherlandjack:

Amphetamine induced psychosis.

Something else I've been working on the past few days alongside my college project, again something less conceptual. There is a diagram of the chemical dopamine sewn into the illustration with white thread, taking on the appearance of a constellation. Dopamine is focused around feelings of happiness and pleasure, but has also been associated with certain psychological disorders such as schizophrenia.

No the title isn't to do with the chemical dopamine being involved, there is a completely different reason for the title. I may explain it when I've added a few more to the collection.

sutherlandjack:

Just thought I'd make a post putting the two illustrations next to each other so you can see how they work together.

Will be uploading them to etsy.com later on if all goes well in the realm of Jack Sutherland.

A3 size.

An illustration I did before using pen and ink, which was then screen printed onto t-shirts for a small project I started up known as The Deep Six Project.

sutherlandjack: The Dented Beetle. Progress shot on the room,...

sutherlandjack:

The Dented Beetle.

Progress shot on the room, this isn't the final layout, nor will the work be put up like this. At the moment I'm just keeping the work in here to keep it out the classroom, and to find any possible gaps that may need filling.

My next two weeks are going to be dedicated to wallpapering the walls inside the room, as well as putting up corrugated card and then painting and working onto this. I quite like the idea of spraying onto it with dyes to stain certain parts of it, and also adding a small desk, along with other objects such as shoes and pieces of food wrapping, to suggest the idea of this schizophrenic using this space as a studio rather than a place to present his work. I will construct a fourth wall to go over the front which will have an entrance, as well as putting up a roof which I can then hang a lightbulb from.

Inside the room I'm going to fill various parts of the floor so there is only enough room for one person to stand on their own. I like the idea of suspending a single person in this seemingly alternate reality, filled with work, all obsessing over this one machine.

There are lots of references in the room hinting towards the idea of me being insane, as if to blur the boundaries between whether I'm pretending to be insane for the project, or I'm actually becoming psychotic and obsessive over this project. Leading to the viewer feeling unsure on what is part of the project and what isn't, hopefully leaving them feeling slightly confused to what is 'real' and what isn't. Then along with the big body of work and so much detail the viewer is more than likely to feel overwhelmed and anxious in here alone.

Hopefully the viewer will feel unsure of what is 'real' and what isn't, isolated, and perhaps slightly anxious, replicating common symptoms of schizophrenia.

My main aim of this is to suspend the viewer, even if only for a brief moment in this alternate reality, created by James Rogers The Inventor.
